Case IH 3406 – Engine Controller / EDC: Engine Controller Waste Gate Turbocharger Actuator Circuit - Power Stage Overtemperature

Issue description

This code indicates that the internal driver circuit (power stage) inside the engine controller, which provides power/ground to the wastegate turbocharger actuator, has exceeded its maximum safe operating temperature.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL) (SR/SV series)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL) (TR/TV series)
  • Farmall Tractors (105N, 110C)
  • Backhoe Loaders (580N, 580SN, 580ST)

Check the cause

  1. Monitor the condition to see if the overtemperature event was a transient spike

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Controller and the Wastegate Turbocharger Actuator for a short-to-ground

  3. Check the wastegate turbocharger actuator solenoid for failure or excessive current draw

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault code using a diagnostic service tool. Run the engine under load to see if the code resets. If it does not return, return the machine to service.

  2. Replace the EDC

If the fault code persists and becomes an active, hard fault, the internal power stage is permanently damaged. Replace the EDC.

  3. Restore Parameters

If the EDC is replaced, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and follow the appropriate service tool procedure to 'Restore Self Learning Parameters' and program the new module to the tractor/machine.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Controller (EDC / ECM)

Look up exact part number using the machine's PIN/Serial Number in the CNH parts catalog.

  • Wastegate Turbocharger Actuator

Replace if the actuator itself is shorted and caused the failure.
