Case IH 3407 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) / Engine ECU: CAN Bus: Timeout Error of CAN-Transmit-Frame EDC to NOx Sensor
Issue description
Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Engine Control Unit is not receiving the expected data frames from the NOx sensor within the required time limit. The missing data packet (EDC2NOx) contains critical parameters for the SCR system.

Check the cause
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the EDC and the NOx sensor control module for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or rodent damage.
Disconnect the NOx sensor plug (5-pin MCON connector) and check for pushed-out pins, water intrusion, or corrosion.
Verify that the NOx sensor is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground, as a lack of power will cause the sensor to drop off the CAN bus.
Look for other SCR/NOx codes (e.g., 3529, 3530, 3533). If multiple CAN components are timing out, the issue is likely in the main CAN backbone rather than the sensor itself.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the faulty NOx sensor on the exhaust system (note whether it is the upstream or downstream sensor, as they have different part numbers and cable lengths).
Disconnect Electrics
Unplug the electrical connector from the NOx sensor's control module box. Unbolt the control box from its mounting bracket.
Remove the Probe
Use a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket or a wrench to unscrew the sensor probe from the exhaust pipe. Tip: Apply penetrating oil if the sensor is seized to avoid stripping the exhaust bung threads.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new NOx sensor probe into the exhaust pipe by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Mount and Route
Secure the new sensor's control module to the mounting bracket. Route the wiring harness exactly as it was from the factory, ensuring it is secured away from extreme heat sources.
Reconnect
Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 3407 fault code. Some systems require a reset or calibration routine to initialize the new NOx sensor on the CAN bus.
Test Run
Run the engine up to operating temperature to ensure the SCR system engages and the fault code does not return.
