Case IH 3409 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Oil pressure sensor : Defect fault check for minimum oil pressure from sensor

Issue description

Engine oil pressure has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold while the engine is running. This can be triggered by a genuine low oil pressure mechanical condition, or by an electrical defect in the sensor circuit (such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or a sensor voltage that is too low).

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. Ensure it is at the proper level and that the oil is not heavily diluted with fuel or coolant.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the oil pressure sensor. Look for frayed wires, corrosion, open circuits, or shorts to ground, which can cause a false low-voltage reading.

  3. Perform a mechanical pressure test by connecting a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine block in place of the sensor. If mechanical pressure is normal, the sensor or wiring is defective. If mechanical pressure is low, there is a mechanical lubrication issue (e.g., failing oil pump, worn bearings) that must be addressed immediately.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the machine to cool down.

    Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning the sensor replacement.

  2. Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block.

    Location varies by engine model (e.g., F5C vs. ISM).

  3. Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

    This connector includes supply, ground, and output.

  4. Unscrew the faulty oil pressure sensor from the engine block.

    Use an appropriate socket or wrench to carefully remove it.

  5. Clean the threaded port on the engine block.

    This ensures a good seal for the new sensor.

  6. Apply liquid thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor.

    Only necessary if the new sensor does not come with pre-applied sealant.

  7. Thread the new sensor into the block by hand, then tighten to specified torque.

    Threading by hand prevents cross-threading.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector.

    Ensure it clicks securely into place.

  9. Start the engine and inspect the sensor area for any oil leaks.

    Verify the physical installation is secure and sealed.

  10. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 3409 fault code from the Engine ECU.

    Verify that the code does not return during operation.
