Case IH 3410 – Engine Controller: Desired Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) Position Can Not Be Reached (Valve Sticks, Position Sensor Mismatched)

There is a deviation between the ECU's commanded position and the measured position of the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA). This indicates that the physical valve is jammed/sticking, or the internal position sensor has failed and is reporting mismatched data.

   Connect a diagnostic tool to read active codes and verify if the fault is active or stored.

   Remove the intake pipe from the turbo intercooler to the TVA and inspect the throttle valve body for heavy carbon buildup, soot, or foreign debris causing the valve to bind.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the TVA, specifically checking output pins A34 and A49 on the 60-pin engine connector for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery.

   Use a service tool to monitor 'Desired Throttle Position' versus 'Actual Throttle Position' to determine if the internal position sensor is faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Access the TVA

   Loosen the clamps and remove the intake piping connected to the Throttle Valve Actuator.

   Attempt Cleaning

   If the valve is physically jammed with soot, use an intake/EGR safe solvent to clean the throttle body and butterfly valve. Gently verify that the valve can move without binding.

   Replace the Actuator

   If the valve is permanently jammed, the internal motor has burned out, or the position sensor has failed, the TVA must be replaced. Disconnect the electrical harness, remove the mounting bolts, clean the mating surface, install the new TVA with a new gasket/seal, torque to OEM spec, and reconnect the harness and piping.

   Relearn Procedure

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic software, clear the fault codes, and perform the ECU reset/relearn procedure for the new TVA to restore self-learning parameters and take the engine out of limp mode.
