Case IH 3411 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Desired Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) Position Can Not Be Reached (Valve Sticks, Position Sensor Mismatched)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the Throttle Valve Actuator to a specific position, but the feedback from the position sensor indicates it has not reached that target. The system will often try to "unblock" the actuator by rapidly opening and closing it.

   Check for other active TVA electrical codes (such as 3818 through 3827, or 3833 through 3835) which point to a wiring issue rather than a mechanical jam.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the 60-pin engine connector (specifically pins A34 and A49) for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing. Ensure the connector at the TVA itself is secure.

   Remove the intake tube and inspect the throttle valve body for heavy carbon buildup, debris, or physical obstructions that could cause the butterfly valve to stick or jam.

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable

   This protects the ECU.

   Disconnect the electrical connections

   Disconnect the connections to the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) and the nearby air pressure/temperature sensor.

   Loosen the clamps and remove the intake tube

   Remove the intake tube connected to the TVA.

   Remove the bolts and nuts

   Remove the hardware securing the TVA to the intake manifold.

   Remove the TVA and clean or discard

   If the valve is simply choked with soot, clean it thoroughly with an appropriate intake cleaner. If the internal sensor is mismatched or the actuator motor has failed, discard the unit.

   Install the new Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA)

   Install the new TVA and reinstall the intake tube.

   Torque the mounting bolts and nuts

   Torque to 20 - 30 N·m (15 - 22 lb ft).

   Reconnect the electrical connections

   Reconnect the connections to the TVA and the air pressure/temperature sensor.

   Reconnect the battery and verify repair

   Turn on the machine, and use the electronic service tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and verify that the TVA responds correctly to ECU commands.
