Case IH 3412 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Speed limitation activates torque limitation

Issue description

This is a protective "derate" condition. The engine control module has detected a critical issue (such as fuel starvation, overheating, or a sensor failure) and has intentionally limited the engine's speed and torque output to prevent catastrophic damage to the engine or drivetrain. Because this is a symptom-based derate code, it is almost always accompanied by a primary fault code that indicates the actual root cause.

Check the cause

  1. Scan for Primary Codes: Connect a diagnostic scanner and retrieve all active and stored DTCs. Look for codes related to rail pressure (e.g., 3110, 3111, 3112), overheating (e.g., 3413), or sensor failures.

  2. Live Data Monitoring: Use the diagnostic tool to monitor Engine Speed, Total Engine Torque, Rail Pressure (Desired vs. Actual), and Fuel Quantity.

  3. Fuel Restriction Test: Check the low-pressure fuel system for restrictions. Measure the fuel inlet restriction before the lift pump.

  4. Air Ingress Test: Install a clear test line before the inlet of the high-pressure fuel pump to observe if air is entering the fuel system while the engine is running.

  5. Pressure Tests: Verify the gear supply (lift) pump pressure and check the fuel supply pressure to the high-pressure pump (CP3).

Repair steps

  1. Address Primary Faults

    Diagnose and repair the primary fault code that caused the ECU to initiate the speed/torque limitation. If a specific sensor (like a rail pressure sensor or lambda sensor) is flagged, replace it.

  2. Service the Fuel System

    If no other codes are present, the most common cause of a torque derate is fuel starvation. Drain the water separator and replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters.

  3. Inspect Lines and Fittings

    Inspect all fuel lines and Voss o-ring fittings for leaks or air ingress. Repair or replace any damaged lines.

  4. Clean the Tank

    If fuel pressure drops below 4.0 psi during testing, check the fuel tank for debris blocking the pickup tube and clean it as required.

  5. Clear Codes

    Once the physical repairs are made, use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes from the EDC.

  6. Validation Test

    Run the engine under load (e.g., hydraulic stall, hydrostatic stall, or field operation) to its rated RPM to verify that the torque limitation has been deactivated and full power is restored.
