Case IH 3413 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Overheat protection activates torque limitation

The engine has entered a protective derate (torque limitation) mode because a critical temperature threshold has been exceeded. The system limits the engine's power output to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure due to overheating. This is typically triggered when the coolant temperature, oil temperature, or intake manifold temperature exceeds the maximum warning limit.

   Check engine coolant and engine oil levels to ensure they are at proper capacities

   Inspect the radiator, water pump, and hoses for any visible coolant leaks

   Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live data from the Coolant Temperature Sensor, Ambient Air Temperature Sensor, and Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor for implausible spikes

   Ensure radiator fins are not blocked by agricultural debris (chaff, dirt) and verify cooling fan/viscous drive engagement

   Clear Blockages & Top Off Fluids

   If the radiator is plugged with debris, blow it out with compressed air. Top off the coolant reservoir if the level has fallen below the warning limit.

   Test/Replace the Thermostat

   If the engine is genuinely overheating but the radiator is clear and coolant is full, the thermostat may be stuck closed. Drain the coolant, remove the thermostat housing, and replace the thermostat and gasket.

   Replace Faulty Sensors

   If the diagnostic tool shows a temperature sensor is shorted, reading out of range, or failing to change resistance as the engine warms up, locate the faulty sensor (usually the coolant temperature sensor near the thermostat housing) and replace it.

   Clear Codes

   After the mechanical repair or sensor replacement, use the diagnostic tool to clear the EDC fault codes and run the machine under load to ensure code 3413 does not return.
