Case IH 3415 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Short Circuit In Glow Plugs - Cyl. 2

This code indicates that the engine control system has detected a short circuit (resistance is too low) in the electrical circuit for the cylinder #2 glow plug. This can be caused by an internal short within the glow plug itself or a short to ground in the wiring harness supplying power to the glow plug.

   Verify that fault code 3415 is currently active using an Electronic Service Tool

   Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position

   Locate cylinder #2 and disconnect the electrical connector from the glow plug

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between the glow plug terminal and a clean chassis ground (ensure the ground point is free of paint, oil, and dirt)

   If the resistance is less than 0.75 Ω (glow plug cause): The glow plug has failed and is shorted internally. Proceed to replacement

   If the resistance is approximately 1 Ω (wiring harness cause): The glow plug is functioning correctly. The short circuit is in the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the glow plug. Inspect the harness for chafing or melted insulation

   Prep the Machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts during repair.

   Access the Glow Plug

   Locate the cylinder #2 glow plug on the engine cylinder head. Depending on the machine (especially on tightly packed skid steers), you may need to remove the engine cover or air intake piping for clearance.

   Remove the Wiring

   Carefully remove the retaining nut or pull the electrical connector off the top of the cylinder #2 glow plug.

   Extract the Glow Plug

   Using a deep socket, carefully loosen and extract the glow plug from the cylinder head. Caution: Do not force it if it is seized, as breaking a glow plug off in the cylinder head will require major engine disassembly. Use penetrating oil if necessary.

   Install the New Part

   Thread the new glow plug in by hand to ensure it does not cross-thread. Tighten it to the OEM torque specification (do not over-tighten, as the threads are delicate).

   Reassemble

   Reattach the electrical connector/wire to the glow plug terminal. Reinstall any covers or piping that were removed.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position to let the glow plug module cycle, and start the engine. Use your Electronic Service Tool to clear the inactive 3415 code and verify it does not return.
