Case IH 3416 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Short Circuit In Glow Plugs - Cyl.3

The engine control module has detected an electrical short circuit (either to ground or to battery voltage) in the heating circuit specifically for the glow plug located in cylinder number 3.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine Controller to the cylinder 3 glow plug. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched harnesses that could be shorting to the engine block (ground) or another power wire.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the cylinder 3 glow plug. Check for corrosion, moisture, or melted plastic that could bridge the connection.

   With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the cylinder 3 glow plug itself. If the resistance is near zero (continuity to ground), the glow plug has failed internally and is shorted.

   Verify system fuses are intact before installing a new plug, as a dead short in a glow plug can sometimes blow the associated glow plug system fuse or damage the glow plug control unit/relay.

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Allow the engine to cool completely.

   Locate the glow plug for cylinder 3 on the engine cylinder head.

   Note: The F5C service manual notes that accessing the cylinder 4 glow plug requires removing the turbo intake pipe; cylinder 3 is generally more accessible but may still require moving minor brackets or wiring out of the way.

   Disconnect the electrical connection (nut or push-on connector) from the top of the cylinder 3 glow plug.

   Thoroughly clean the area around the base of the glow plug with compressed air.

   This prevents dirt or carbon from falling into the open cylinder.

   Using a deep socket, carefully loosen and remove the faulty glow plug.

   Thread the new glow plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect the electrical connection to the glow plug.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position to cycle the glow plugs, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear fault code 3416.
