Case IH 3424 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): ENGINE, Fuel Filter Clogged

The engine control system has detected a restriction in the fuel delivery system, typically caused by a blocked or heavily contaminated fuel filter, which results in a pressure drop across the filter housing.

   Visually inspect the fuel filter and water separator glass bowl (if equipped) for heavy contamination, gelling (in cold weather), or excessive water buildup.

   Inspect the low-pressure fuel lines from the tank to the filter housing for kinks, blockages, or collapsed hoses that could mimic a clogged filter.

   Check the fuel pressure sensor and its wiring harness for damage that could send a false low-pressure signal to the ECU.

   Verify that the low-pressure fuel lift pump is operating correctly and delivering adequate fuel volume to the filter housing.

   Preparation

   Turn off the engine, ensure the machine is safely parked, and allow the engine to cool.

   Drain

   Locate the engine fuel filter/water separator assembly. Place a drain pan underneath and open the petcock/drain valve to empty the fuel and water from the housing.

   Removal

   Using a filter wrench, unscrew and remove the clogged fuel filter cartridge or spin-on canister.

   Clean

   Wipe the filter mounting base clean with a lint-free cloth and ensure the old rubber gasket is not stuck to the housing.

   Installation

   Apply a light coat of clean diesel fuel or engine oil to the rubber seal of the new fuel filter. Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten it according to the manufacturer's specifications (usually an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn).

   Prime the System

   Prime the fuel system to purge any trapped air. This is done using the manual primer pump on the filter housing or by cycling the ignition key (depending on the specific machine's lift pump setup).

   Test

   Start the engine and inspect the filter area for any fuel leaks.

   Clear Code

   Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or diagnostic scanner to clear the 3424 fault code from the ECU. In some systems, the code will move to an inactive state automatically once normal fuel pressure is restored and the engine is run.
