Case IH 3424 – ENGINE: Fuel Filter Clogged
Issue description
The system detects that the fuel rail pressure is lower than the desired target, which points to a restriction in the low-pressure fuel supply. The engine controller flags this when it struggles to maintain adequate fuel volume/pressure, most commonly caused by a blocked fuel filter, but it can also be triggered by a leak in the high-pressure system or low efficiency in the low-pressure pump circuit.

Check the cause
Check the fuel filter/water separator glass bowl (if equipped) for heavy water accumulation, gelling, or visible debris
Inspect the low-pressure fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump and filter housing for kinks, collapses, or leaks that could restrict flow or introduce air
Verify that the low-pressure fuel lift pump is operating correctly and delivering adequate flow to the high-pressure pump
Ensure there are no visible leaks in the high-pressure fuel rails or injector lines, which can also cause a rail pressure lower than desired condition
Repair steps
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the outside of the fuel filter housing to prevent dirt from entering the sensitive high-pressure fuel system.
Drain the Filter
Place a catch pan under the filter. Open the drain petcock at the bottom of the water separator/fuel filter to drain the fuel.
Remove the Filter
Using a filter wrench, unscrew and remove the spin-on fuel filter cartridge.
Prep the New Filter
Lubricate the inner and outer rubber O-ring seals on the new filter with clean diesel fuel. Do not pre-fill the filter with unfiltered fuel from a can, as this can damage the injectors.
Install the Filter
Thread the new filter onto the housing by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten according to the manufacturer's specifications (usually 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn further).
Prime the System
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (without cranking) for 30 seconds to allow the electric lift pump to prime the system, or use the manual hand primer pump until resistance is felt.
Test and Clear Codes
Start the engine and check for leaks. Connect a diagnostic service tool (EST) to clear the 3424 fault code from the Engine ECU.
