3431

Case IH 3431 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: EGR Inducement most severe derating level

Issue description

The system has detected a critical or prolonged failure within the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. To comply with Tier 4 / Stage V emissions regulations, the system has activated an 'inducement,' forcing the machine into a severe power derate (limp mode) to prompt immediate repair.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Farmall Series (55C, 65C, 75C, 85C, 95C, 105C, 115C, 95U, 105U, 115U, Quantum series)
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Skid Steers (SR210, SR240, SV250, SV300)
  • Compact Track Loaders (TR270, TR320)

Check the cause

  1. Scan for primary root-cause fault codes that triggered the inducement (e.g., codes 3665 or 3666 for 'Desired EGR Valve Position Can Not Be Reached', or intake/pressure sensor faults)

  2. Inspect the EGR valve visually and mechanically for excessive soot, carbon buildup, or mechanical binding

  3. Check the wiring harness and connectors at the EGR valve for open circuits, shorts to ground, or poor pin fitment

  4. Use a dealer-level diagnostic tool (such as Case IH EST, Jaltest, or TEXA) to monitor live data for the EGR valve position and perform an active actuation test

Repair steps

  1. Diagnose and repair primary fault

Diagnose and repair the primary fault. If the EGR valve is mechanically stuck due to carbon buildup or has an internal electrical failure, it must be replaced.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's battery.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the EGR control valve.

  4. Remove EGR valve

Remove the mounting hardware securing the EGR valve to the manifold/cooler and remove the valve.

  5. Clean mating surfaces

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of all carbon and old gasket material.

  6. Install new EGR valve

Install the new EGR valve using a new gasket and torque the bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Perform EGR Valve Reset

Connect a diagnostic tool to perform an 'EGR Valve Reset' or calibration learn cycle. This allows the ECU to learn the new valve's fully open and fully closed end-stops.

  9. Clear fault codes and reset inducement

Clear the fault codes. Because 3431 is an inducement code, you will likely need to initiate an 'Emissions Safe Harbor Reset' or perform a forced DPF regeneration via the diagnostic tool to exit the derate mode and clear the inducement.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • EGR Control Valve

    Alternative/Cross-reference numbers: 38017879, 5801608746, 55460. Fits F5C / F5D FPT engines.

  • EGR Valve Gasket

Generic part (specific part number depends on the exact engine block, but a new gasket is always required when replacing the valve).
