Case IH 3431 – ENGINE ECU: EGR Inducement most severe derating level

This is an emissions-related protection code. The engine control system has detected a severe malfunction, tampering, or a prolonged ignored warning regarding the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. As a result, the system applies the most severe derating level, drastically limiting engine power, torque, and RPMs to prevent further operation until the root cause is repaired.

   Scan for primary fault codes related to the EGR valve position, EGR temperature, or NOx sensors (e.g., EGR plausibility errors, short circuits, or governor deviation errors).

   Inspect the EGR valve for heavy soot buildup, mechanical binding, or a stuck-open/stuck-closed condition.

   Check the wiring harness connecting to the EGR valve and EGR inducement lamp for short circuits to the battery or ground.

   Inspect the EGR flex pipe and cooler for leaks, blockages, or physical damage.

   Connect Diagnostic Tool

   Hook up the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read all active engine faults.

   Address the Root Cause

   Repair the primary EGR fault identified in your diagnostic checks. This usually involves cleaning a clogged EGR circuit, repairing a damaged wiring harness, or replacing a failed EGR valve.

   Replace Components (if necessary)

   If replacing the EGR valve, remove the old unit, clean the mating surfaces thoroughly, and install the new valve using new OEM gaskets.

   Restore Self-Learning Parameters

   After replacing or cleaning EGR components, you must use the diagnostic service tool to perform the 'Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters'. This allows the Engine ECU to calibrate to the new EGR valve's position.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear the inactive fault codes. Run the engine to operating temperature and verify that the 3431 code does not return and the engine derate has been lifted.
