3436 (DTC FBBF) - ECU

Case IH 3436 (DTC FBBF) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Inducement system is locked due to 3 detections in 40 hours.

Issue description

This is a 'repeat offender' code related to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) emissions system. It means that an emissions-related fault of the same class type has occurred more than 3 times within a 40-hour operating window, resulting in an inducement lock condition.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow (7240, 8240, 9240)
  • 30 Series Axial-Flow (7230, 8230, 9230)
  • Puma series
  • Farmall series (120A, 40-45-50 CVT)
  • Steiger AFS Connect
  • NEF engines
  • Cursor 9 engines

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for the specific active urea/DEF system faults that are causing the inducement

  2. Inspect all wiring and connectors to the ECU and Dosing Control Unit (DCU) for damage, ensuring connector locks are not broken and securely hold the connectors in place

  3. Check the CAN network using the EST and verify there is 60 ohms of resistance between the CAN HI and CAN LO wires

  4. Verify that the tractor battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply, which can cause erratic ECU behavior

Repair steps

  1. Connect EST

Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Navigate to configuration

Navigate to the configuration menu (configuration icon).

  3. Select unlock screen

Select the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset / Unlock Inducement' screen.

  4. Configure item

    Click on 'CONFIGURE SELECTED ITEM'.

  5. Reset counter

Click the button labeled 'RESET ENGINE RESTART COUNTER / UNLOCK INDUCEMENT' to clear the inducement restart counters.

  6. Identify underlying faults

Once the system is unlocked, use the EST to identify the underlying DEF/AdBlue system faults that originally triggered the lock.

  7. Resolve active faults

Follow the appropriate service manual procedures to resolve each of those existing active faults (e.g., replacing a faulty NOx sensor or DEF quality sensor).

  8. Perform verification test

Perform the SCR Fault Repair Verification Test using the EST before returning the machine to service to ensure the root cause is fully resolved.
