Case IH 3444 (F-519868-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Torque limitation due to excessive exhaust gas temperature.

Issue description

When the exhaust gas temperature exceeds the safe pre-warning threshold, the system triggers this code to protect the engine and turbocharger from thermal damage. As a protective measure, the control module forces a derate (torque limitation or engine power loss), which restricts the machine's operational power until the temperature normalizes or the underlying issue is fixed.

Check the cause

  1. Check for actual overheating: Verify if the machine was operating under extreme load or if there is a physical restriction in the exhaust system (such as a clogged DPF or SCR catalyst).

  2. Inspect the EGT sensor wiring: Check the wiring harness and connector leading to the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor for melting, chafing, corrosion, or a disconnected line.

  3. Test the sensor circuit: Use a diagnostic tool or multimeter to check for voltage irregularities (shorted to high/low source) or erratic data from the sensor.

  4. Check for accompanying codes: Look for active DEF/AdBlue dosing codes or SCR inducement codes, as a malfunctioning emissions system can cause exhaust temperatures to spike.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Disconnect Harness

    Locate the faulty EGT sensor on the exhaust pipe / EGR pipe and carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector.

  3. Remove Sensor

    Using the appropriate wrench, loosen and remove the EGT sensor from the exhaust piping. (Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized from heat cycling).

  4. Install New Sensor

    Thread the new EGT sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  5. Reconnect Harness

    Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  6. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port, clear the active 3444 fault code, and run the engine to verify the code does not return and that temperature readings are within normal parameters.
