Case IH 3444 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque limitation due to excessive exhaust gas temperature
Issue description
The system actively limited engine performance (torque) because the exhaust gas temperature was too high for a duration longer than 3.00 seconds. This is typically caused by extreme working conditions rather than a direct component failure.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Steiger T4B
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Puma series
- Maxxum series
- Magnum series
- Farmall series
Check the cause
Check for other active failure codes influencing the exhaust gas temperature (diagnose emissions or exhaust codes first)
Evaluate operating conditions to determine if the machine was operating under extreme working conditions (e.g., pulling a heavy implement up a steep grade or operating under maximum load in high ambient temperatures)
Monitor live data from the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor using a diagnostic tool to look for erratic spikes or falsely high temperature readings
Repair steps
No Action Required (If extreme conditions verified)
If the code was triggered during an extreme working condition, no repair action is required. The code simply confirms the ECU did its job to protect the engine. Clear the code and return the machine to service.
Address Related Faults
If other exhaust or emissions fault codes are present, follow the repair procedures for those specific codes, as they are likely the root cause of the high exhaust temperatures.
Replace EGT Sensor (If faulty)
Allow the exhaust system to cool completely. Locate the EGT sensor near the DPF/SCR catalyst. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector and remove the faulty sensor. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor, thread it into the exhaust pipe, and tighten to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness and clear the fault codes.
