3445 (DTC F5A2) - ECU

Case IH 3445 (DTC F5A2) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Torque limitation due to excessive fuel temperature.

Issue description

This is an informational fault code. It indicates that the engine control system detected the fuel temperature exceeding the maximum safe threshold for a duration longer than 50.0 milliseconds. To protect the engine and fuel system components, the ECU actively commanded a temporary performance limitation (engine derate/torque reduction).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma Series (e.g., Puma 160, 185)
  • Farmall 40-45-50 Tractors (Cab/CVT models)
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (e.g., 7240, 8240, 9240)

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active codes: Scan the ECU failure memory for other active fault codes related to the fuel temperature sensor (e.g., voltage too high/low) or fuel pressure.

  2. Inspect the Fuel Cooler: Check the fuel cooler and surrounding heat exchangers (radiator, condenser) for external blockages caused by chaff, dirt, or crop debris.

  3. Check Fuel Levels: Operating the machine on a very low tank of fuel can cause the recirculated return fuel to overheat since there is less volume in the tank to dissipate the heat.

  4. Test the Fuel Temperature Sensor: Monitor the live data for the fuel temperature sensor. If the reading is erratic or shows an impossibly high temperature on a cold engine, the sensor or its wiring harness is likely faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Root Cause

Address any secondary fault codes related to fuel temperature sensors or fuel delivery.

  2. Clean the Cooling Package

Thoroughly blow out the fuel cooler, radiator, and condenser fins with compressed air to ensure proper airflow.

  3. Replace Faulty Components

If the fuel temperature sensor is reading out of specification, disconnect the harness, replace the sensor, and torque to OEM specifications. If the fuel cooler is internally restricted or physically damaged, drain the fuel lines, unbolt the cooler from the cooling package, and install a replacement unit.

  4. Clear Codes and Test

Once the physical repairs or cleanings are complete, clear the ECU fault memory. Run the machine under a working load to verify that the fuel temperature remains within the normal operating range and the torque limitation does not reactivate.
