Case IH 3447 (DTC F7A2) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / ECM: Torque limitation due to excessive oil temperature
Issue description
Informational fault code logged when the system actively limits engine performance (torque reduction) because the oil temperature has exceeded safe operating thresholds for a duration longer than 50.0 milliseconds. Confirms a temporary power lack was intentional and caused by an extreme working condition.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Puma Series
- Magnum Series
- Farmall Series
Check the cause
Check for accompanying fault codes related to the cooling system, oil pressure, or engine temperature sensors (e.g., DTC 3459)
Verify operating conditions to determine if the machine was operating under an extreme, sustained heavy load
Inspect engine oil level and quality, as low oil levels reduce the thermal mass available to dissipate heat
Inspect the cooling system to ensure the radiator and oil coolers are free of chaff, dust, and debris, and verify coolant levels and cooling fan operation
If the code persists under light loads or when the engine is cold, check the oil temperature sensor's wiring harness for shorts to ground or open circuits
Repair steps
Cool Down & Clear
If the code was triggered by heavy load, reduce the engine load, allow the machine to idle to cool the oil, and clear the code. Resume operation to see if the code returns.
Clean Heat Exchangers
Blow out the radiator, charge air cooler, and engine oil cooler with compressed air.
Replace Fluids
If the engine oil is degraded, burnt, or past its service interval, perform an oil and filter change.
Locate Sensor
If diagnostic testing proves the oil temperature sensor is reading out of range (e.g., reporting high heat when the engine is cold), locate the engine oil temperature sensor on the engine block.
Disconnect Harness
Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor.
Replace Sensor
Unscrew the faulty sensor and quickly install the replacement to minimize oil loss.
Torque and Reconnect
Torque the new sensor to OEM specifications and reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the ECU fault codes and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
