Case IH 3448 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Torque limitation due to turbocharger protection after start

Issue description

This is an informational fault code indicating that the engine control software actively limited engine torque (performance) to protect the turbocharger immediately following engine startup. This occurs during extreme working conditions (such as cold starts where oil flow to the turbocharger is delayed) and is logged if the torque limitation event lasts longer than 50.0 milliseconds.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case IH Puma Series Tractors
  • Case IH Farmall 40 / 45 / 50 Tractors
  • Machines utilizing MTA CCM & APH Stage V MR systems

Check the cause

  1. Scan for other active or stored DTCs related to engine oil pressure, engine oil temperature, intake manifold temperature, or turbocharger speed and actuators.

  2. Verify the symptom with the operator to confirm that the power loss was temporary and occurred immediately after startup.

Repair steps

  1. Acknowledge the Code

Recognize that this code is logged to confirm a temporary power lack due to a built-in protection strategy, not a physical defect.

  2. Address Accompanying Codes

If power reduction occurred due to an actual defect, there will be another failure code triggering the torque limitation. You must diagnose and repair the root cause of that secondary code.

  3. Clear the ECU Memory

If code 3448 (F8A2) is the only code present, no actions are necessary due to this failure alone. Clear the fault code from the ECU.

  4. Warm-Up Best Practices

Advise the operator to allow the engine to idle and warm up properly after starting, especially in cold weather, to ensure adequate oil flow to the turbocharger before applying heavy loads.
