3449 (DTC E812) - ECU

Case IH 3449 (DTC E812) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Calculated engine speed

Issue description

The control module has detected an internal hardware or processing error specifically related to how it calculates or interprets the engine speed signal.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • 7240
  • 8240
  • 9240
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Use the machine's on-board diagnostic screen or a service tool to confirm DTC E812 (3449) is active.

  2. Check the 12V power supplies and fuses to the ECU, as voltage drops or high-side driver power supply failures can trigger false internal failure codes.

  3. Inspect the ECU connectors for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could cause erratic data or short circuits.

  4. Determine if there is a software update available for the ECU, as some internal calculation errors can be resolved with a reflash.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the ECU to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the harnesses from the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins and clean them with contact cleaner. Reconnect and test the machine.

  3. Replace the ECU

Because the fault description explicitly states 'ECU internal failure,' if power and ground circuits are intact, the internal hardware of the ECU has failed and the module must be replaced.

  4. Install New Module

Mount the replacement Engine ECU and securely connect the wiring harnesses.

  5. Program and Calibrate

A new or remanufactured ECU will be blank or require machine-specific flashing. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software payload for your specific combine/tractor model and engine.

  6. Test

Clear the fault codes. Start the engine and command it to maximum speed to verify that the calculated engine speed reads correctly and the fault code does not return.
