Case IH 3450 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: eVGT (Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger) actuator is blocked

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the electromechanical actuator responsible for varying the turbine geometry is physically stuck, jammed, or unable to reach its commanded position.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Faults: Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm if DTC 3398 / 3450 is currently active. Check for related active codes, such as 3598 (CAN communication error between EDC and eVGT actuator) or 3498 (eVGT power supply electrical failure), which point to electrical rather than mechanical issues.

  2. Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the eVGT linkage on the turbocharger. Check if the linkage is disconnected, damaged, or physically binding/sticking.

  3. Wiring & Continuity Check: Ensure all connections from the ECU to the eVGT actuator are clean and tight. Check for continuity and ground signals in the harness (e.g., between the EVGT actuator relay and the EVGT actuator connector). If there is continuity to ground where there shouldn't be, there is a short in the harness.

  4. Fuse Check: Check the dedicated fuse for the eVGT actuator (e.g., on Optum models, this is fuse F-203, a 20A Mini Yellow fuse).

Repair steps

  1. Clear Physical Blockages

    If the diagnostic inspection reveals that the turbocharger wastegate or eVGT linkage is stuck due to soot, debris, or corrosion, attempt to carefully clean and free the linkage.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the multimeter tests show a short to ground or an open circuit in the harness between the ECU and the actuator, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Replace Blown Fuses

    If the eVGT actuator fuse is blown, replace it and cycle the key to see if the actuator initializes properly.

  4. Software Update

    If the linkage moves freely and the wiring/fuses are intact, connect the EST and reload the latest software to the ECU to rule out a software logic error.

  5. Component Replacement

    If the fault persists after software calibration and wiring checks, the eVGT actuator has suffered an internal mechanical or motor failure and must be replaced. Note: On some FPT engine applications, if the actuator has lost its reference position permanently or the internal vanes are seized, the entire turbocharger assembly may need to be replaced and recalibrated.
