3452

Case IH 3452 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel main filter cartridge severely clogged

Issue description

The fuel main filter cartridge is severely clogged and must be replaced immediately, risk of bursting, torque limitation active.

Applies to these machines

  • Maxxum series
  • Puma series
  • JXU series
  • CX series excavators
  • N Series Backhoe Loaders
  • wheel loaders

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel tank and water separator for heavy contamination, algae/microbial growth, or excessive water

  2. If operating in freezing temperatures, check if the diesel fuel has gelled or if paraffin wax has dropped out

  3. Verify the fuel filter pressure switch/sensor wiring (if code 3452 is active but the filter is new, the sensor or harness may be faulty)

  4. Ensure there are no pinched, kinked, or collapsed fuel supply lines between the tank and the filter housing

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool. Clean the area around the fuel filter housing to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.

  2. Disconnect Sensors

If the filter cartridge has a Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor or pressure switch attached to the bottom bowl, carefully unplug the electrical connector.

  3. Remove the Clogged Filter

Place a drain pan under the filter. Unscrew the severely clogged fuel main filter cartridge. Drain the fuel and discard the old filter according to local environmental regulations.

  4. Clean and Inspect

Wipe the filter housing base with a clean, lint-free cloth. Inspect the threaded stud for damage.

  5. Prepare the New Filter

Apply a light coat of clean diesel fuel or clean engine oil to the rubber sealing gasket of the new fuel filter cartridge. (Do not pre-fill the filter with unfiltered fuel from a can, as this can introduce debris directly to the injectors).

  6. Install the New Filter

Thread the new filter onto the housing by hand until the gasket makes contact with the base, then tighten it according to the instructions printed on the filter (usually 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn). Reinstall the WIF sensor into the bottom of the new filter if applicable, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Prime the Fuel System

Use the manual priming pump (hand plunger) or cycle the ignition key to activate the electric lift pump until the fuel system is purged of air and the primer feels firm.

  8. Test and Clear

Start the engine and check for fuel leaks around the filter seal. Connect a diagnostic tool to the ECU and clear fault code 3452 to remove the active torque limitation.
