Case IH 3453 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): Fuel filter clog or circuit failure

This indicates that the system has detected a restriction in the fuel delivery system (a clogged filter) or there is an electrical issue (short/open) within the fuel filter clog sensor circuit.

   Inspect the primary fuel filter/water separator and secondary fuel filter for heavy contamination, gelling, or water buildup (most common cause).

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the fuel filter clog sensor for chafed wires, disconnected plugs, or corrosion at the connector.

   Check for the presence of related code DTC 4CB5 (3454). If 3453 is the only code present, prioritize replacing the filter and checking circuit continuity before condemning the switch itself.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and allow the engine to cool. Ensure the machine is parked safely, as this fault can cause an automatic reduction to low idle speed or full power loss.

   Replace the Fuel Filter(s)

   Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator. Drain the fuel bowl, remove the old spin-on filter, and replace it with a new OEM filter. Lubricate the new filter seal with clean diesel fuel before installation.

   Bleed the Fuel System

   Prime the fuel system to remove any trapped air.

   Inspect/Replace the Sensor

   If replacing the filter does not clear the code, locate the fuel filter clog sensor on the filter housing. Disconnect the pigtail and test the circuit for proper voltage. If the wiring is intact but the code persists, replace the fuel filter clog sensor.

   Clear Codes

   Use the diagnostic screen in the cab to clear the fault code and run the engine at maximum speed to verify the repair.
