3454

Case IH 3454 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Plausible sensor failure related to the fuel filter restriction sensor/switch

Issue description

The system detects that the fuel filter is showing as 'clogged' or restricted when the engine is not running. Because fuel is not flowing when the engine is off, a restriction is physically impossible. The controller flags this implausible reading as a sensor failure or a software logic error.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Steiger Series (335, 380, 430, 540, 580, 600)
  • Case IH Quadtrac Series (335, 380, 430, 540, 580, 600)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (210, 230, 245, 275, 305)
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines 20 Series (e.g., 7120)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the fuel filter restriction switch (typically mounted on the primary fuel filter housing) and inspect it for physical damage, such as a broken connector.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor for shorts to ground or open circuits.

  3. Verify if the sensor is stuck closed (it should not indicate a restriction when the engine is off).

  4. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check the engine software version, as false restriction codes are a known issue resolved by software updates.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the fuel filter restriction switch

Turn off the machine and locate the fuel filter restriction switch on the fuel filter head.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the restriction switch.

  3. Inspect the pins

Inspect the pins on both the sensor and the connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or breakage.

  4. Replace the electrical connector

If the connector is broken, splice in a new electrical connector pigtail.

  5. Replace the restriction switch

If the sensor is faulty (stuck closed internally), unscrew the old sensor, install the new restriction switch, and reconnect the harness.

  6. Connect the diagnostic tool

If the sensor and wiring are in good condition, connect the diagnostic tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  7. Update the engine ECU software

Flash/update the engine ECU software to the latest version to correct the false 'plausible sensor failure' logic.

  8. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes and cycle the key to verify the code does not return.
