3456

Case IH 3456 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Charge air cooler efficiency is too low

Issue description

The system has detected that the charge air cooler (intercooler) is not adequately cooling the compressed air coming from the turbocharger before it enters the engine. When the air is not cooled sufficiently, it becomes less dense, which negatively impacts engine combustion efficiency and power output.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the exterior of the charge air cooler and the radiator matrix for blockages caused by dirt, mud, scale accumulation, or crop debris.

  2. Check the engine cooling fan, fan clutch, and V-belt for proper operation and tension.

  3. Verify the intake manifold temperature sensor is not falsely reporting high temperatures.

  4. Inspect the charge air cooler for internal blockages, oil accumulation from turbocharger blow-by, or physical cracks and leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

Turn off the engine and allow the cooling system and exhaust components to cool completely.

  2. Clean the Cooling Package

Access the engine cooling stack. Thoroughly clean the exterior fins of the charge air cooler and radiator using compressed air or low-pressure water to remove any accumulated debris or scale.

  3. Test/Replace Sensors

Test the intake manifold temperature sensor. If it is providing inaccurate readings, disconnect its wiring harness, unthread it from the manifold, and install a new sensor.

  4. Remove the Charge Air Cooler

If the cooler is physically damaged, leaking, or internally restricted, it must be replaced. Loosen the clamps and remove the intake piping connected to the inlet and outlet of the cooler.

  5. Unbolt the Unit

Unbolt the charge air cooler from its mounting brackets on the radiator support assembly and carefully lift it out of the machine.

  6. Install the New Cooler

Drop the new charge air cooler into place and secure the mounting hardware.

  7. Reconnect Piping

Reattach the intake piping. Ensure all clamps are tightened to the correct torque specifications to prevent boost leaks.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3456 fault code from the ECM. Run the machine under load to verify that the intake temperatures remain within the normal operating range and the code does not return.
