Case IH 3459 (DTC 1BD3) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / UCM2 (Engine): Oil temperature too high
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the engine oil temperature has exceeded the safe operating threshold, which can trigger an alarm, a warning light, and potentially an engine derate or shutdown to prevent catastrophic internal damage.

Check the cause
Verify Fluid Levels: Check the engine oil level and engine coolant level. Low oil or coolant can cause rapid overheating.
Inspect the Cooling System: Check the radiator, oil cooler, and heat exchanger for debris blockages (chaff/dust is common on combines). Verify that the engine cooling fan and fan clutch are engaging properly when the engine gets hot.
Verify Actual Temperature: Use an infrared thermometer on the oil pan or oil filter housing to compare the actual physical temperature of the oil against the temperature reading on the cab display/diagnostic tool. If the physical temperature is normal but the sensor reads high, the sensor or wiring is faulty.
Test the Sensor: The FPT engine coolant/oil temperature sensors are variable resistance sensors. At 20°C (68°F), the resistance should be approximately 2.5k Ohms.
Check Wiring: Inspect the sensor wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, open circuits, or shorts to ground/battery.
Repair steps
Resolve mechanical cooling issue
If the engine is genuinely overheating, you must resolve the mechanical cooling issue (e.g., clean the radiator, replace the fan clutch, or replace the oil cooler).
Preparation
Safely shut down the machine, turn off the battery disconnect, and allow the engine to cool completely to avoid burns from hot oil.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the engine oil temperature sensor (often a combined oil temperature/pressure sensor on FPT engines) on the engine block or near the oil filter housing.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Place a small catch pan underneath to catch any residual oil. Unthread the faulty sensor from the block.
Installation
Thread the new sensor into the port. Tighten to the OEM specification (typically around 2.5 ± 0.5 Nm for standard FPT temperature sensors, but refer to the specific thread size torque).
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Turn the battery disconnect back on, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool or the cab display to clear the inactive 3459 / 1BD3 fault code.
Test
Start the engine, check the sensor port for oil leaks, and monitor the temperature display to ensure it rises normally without triggering the alarm.
