Case IH 3461 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Timeout in the shut off path test error
Issue description
The ECU performs internal safety self-tests known as shut-off paths to immediately deactivate all power stages relevant to fuel injection if a critical error is detected. This fault code is triggered when the ECU's internal diagnostic check for this shut-off mechanism fails to complete within the expected timeframe (times out), indicating an internal hardware or software processing failure within the module itself.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Case N-Series Loaders / Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs)
- CNH Utility Tractors
Check the cause
Verify that the machine's battery voltage is within the normal operating range to rule out voltage spikes disrupting self-tests.
Inspect the main ECU wiring harness for proper power and ground connections, looking for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wires at the connectors.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for available software updates, calibration patches, or bug fixes for the ECU.
Clear the fault code and cycle the ignition key to force the ECU to run its initialization self-tests again. If the code immediately returns, the ECU is permanently defective.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery (negative/chassis bonding cable first) before performing any electrical component replacement.
Remove the ECU
Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the Engine Control Unit and unbolt the module from its mounting bracket.
Install the New ECU
Mount the replacement ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.
Reprogramming
Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the ECU with the correct dataset/calibration for the specific machine.
Injector Calibration
Program the specific adjustment values (trim codes) for each fuel injector into the new ECU.
Final Testing
Reconnect the battery, clear any residual installation codes, and run the engine to ensure the 3461 code does not return.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM)
Varies entirely by specific machine model, engine type, and emissions tier. Must be programmed by an authorized dealer to match the machine's specific engine calibration and injector codes.
