Case IH 3462 (DTC E79D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Overvoltage monitoring error

The control module has detected an internal voltage level that exceeds its safe operating parameters. This primarily points to a hardware failure within the ECU's internal voltage regulation or monitoring circuitry.

   Check System Voltage: Use a multimeter to test the battery voltage while the engine is running. Ensure the alternator is not overcharging the system (a failed alternator voltage regulator can spike system voltage and trigger this code).

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the main power supply lines to the ECU for any shorts to a higher voltage source.

   Check Grounds: Verify that all ECU ground connections to the chassis/engine block are clean, tight, and free of corrosion. Poor grounds can cause voltage irregularities.

   Clear and Retest: If external voltages are within normal limits, clear the code using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If DTC E79D returns immediately, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery negative cable to prevent electrical arcing or further damage.

   Locate the ECU

   The Bosch EDC17CV41 ECU is typically mounted directly to the side of the FPT engine block using isolation mounts.

   Disconnect Harnesses

   Carefully release the locking levers on the main wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU.

   Remove the mounting bolts/hardware securing the ECU to the engine block and remove the faulty unit.

   Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the hardware to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and secure. Reconnect the battery.
