Case IH 3464 – Engine Control Module (ECM): eVGT Actuator Position Deviation Below Minimum Tolerance Value
Issue description
The electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator is failing to reach its minimum tolerance position. This is typically caused by the eVGT actuator being mechanically blocked or experiencing friction that is too high, an internal electronic failure, an overheated actuator, a supply voltage problem, or a CAN communication error.

Check the cause
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault is currently present and active.
Inspect the eVGT linkage to see if it is disconnected, damaged, or sticking. Manually check if the actuator is mechanically blocked or if the friction is too high.
Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the engine harness from the ECU and the eVGT actuator, and remove the eVGT actuator relay. Turn the ignition ON and use a multi-meter to check for voltage on the harness side (specifically checking the CAN High, CAN Low, Actuator Ground, and Actuator Supply pins).
Look for accompanying CAN Bus timeout errors (e.g., CAN-Receive-Frame SRA2EDC disconnected or broken) which would indicate a wiring harness failure rather than a failed actuator.
Repair steps
Key Off
Turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the battery if performing harness repairs.
Free the Linkage
If the diagnostic checks reveal that the eVGT linkage is sticking or blocked by soot/debris, clean and free up the linkage.
Repair Wiring
If a short circuit to ground or open circuit was found during the multimeter voltage checks, repair or replace the damaged section of the engine wiring harness.
Replace Actuator/Turbo
If the wiring is intact, the correct voltage is present, and the linkage is not mechanically bound, the eVGT actuator itself has suffered an internal electronic failure or drifted out of calibration. Replace the eVGT actuator (or the turbocharger assembly if the actuator is not serviced separately).
Initialize/Learn
After replacing the actuator, use the EST (Electronic Service Tool) to initialize the new eVGT actuator and clear the fault codes.
