Case IH 3466 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN-Receive-Frame of WPC2ECU, wrong data length
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a data packet (frame) from the Water Pump Controller (WPC), but the length of the data packet does not match the expected protocol standard. Because the data length is incorrect, the ECU cannot process the water pump's status or command its operation properly.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Case IH Puma series tractors
- Case IH Optum series tractors
- Case IH Magnum series tractors
- Case IH Steiger series tractors
- Case IH Axial-Flow 240 Series Combines
Check the cause
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness running between the Water Pump Controller and the Engine ECU for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation
Disconnect and inspect electrical connectors at both the WPC and the ECU for water ingress, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-back terminals
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the WPC connector with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Verify continuity on the CAN High and CAN Low circuits between the WPC and the ECU, ensuring neither wire is shorted to ground or power
Verify that the Water Pump Controller is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the WPC
Locate the Water Pump Controller/Actuator on the front of the engine cooling circuit.
Clean and Re-seat Connections
If the diagnostic checks revealed dirty or loose connectors, clean them thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.
Repair Wiring
If continuity tests failed, locate the break or short in the CAN wiring harness. Splice and seal the damaged wires using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.
Replace the Controller
If the wiring harness, power, ground, and CAN lines test perfectly normal, the internal CAN transceiver inside the Water Pump Controller has failed and is outputting bad data. Remove the mounting bolts and replace the Water Pump Controller / Actuator assembly.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) / DPA5 diagnostic tool to the machine's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive 3466 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the engine and use the diagnostic tool to monitor live CAN bus communication and water pump actuator speed to verify the repair is successful.
Parts you might need
(3)Water Pump Controller / Electronic Water Pump Actuator
OEM part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific FPT engine model (e.g., Cursor 9 vs. NEF 6.7). Always verify with the Case IH parts catalog using the machine's PIN/Serial Number.
Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Only required if the ECU's internal CAN receiver is proven to be the source of the failure, which is highly unlikely compared to a WPC failure.
CAN Bus Repair Pigtail / Harness
Generic part name; required if the connector at the WPC is heavily corroded.
