Case IH 3469 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Water pump actuator: motor effort too high.

Issue description

The electrically controlled variable-speed coolant pump is experiencing abnormal mechanical resistance. The actuator's internal motor is drawing too much current (effort) while trying to reach its commanded position, indicating abnormal friction, pump sticking, or a motor stall condition.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the water pump actuator for loose contacts, corrosion, or damaged wires, as a voltage drop can force the motor to work harder and mimic a mechanical bind.

  2. Verify there are no accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., DTC 3475 / 9D63) which would point to a communication failure rather than a mechanical bind.

  3. With the engine off and belts removed, attempt to rotate the water pump pulley by hand to feel for abnormal friction, rough bearings, or sticking.

  4. Inspect the coolant for heavy contamination, rust, or debris that could be physically jamming the pump impeller.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, allow it to cool completely, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Place a clean drain pan under the radiator/engine block and drain the engine coolant.

  3. Remove Drive Belts

    Relieve tension on the serpentine belt and remove it from the water pump pulley.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

    Carefully unplug the CAN/power connector from the water pump actuator.

  5. Remove the Pump/Actuator

    Unbolt the water pump assembly from the engine block. Note that on many FPT engines, the actuator and the water pump are serviced as a single integrated unit.

  6. Inspect the Block

    Clean the mating surface on the engine block and inspect the internal coolant passages for any debris that may have caused the original pump to jam.

  7. Install New Parts

    Install the new water pump/actuator assembly using a new OEM gasket or seal. Torque the mounting bolts to the engine manufacturer's specifications.

  8. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the drive belt.

  9. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the cooling system with the correct specification of Case IH Akcela/Actull coolant. Bleed any trapped air from the system.

  10. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use a diagnostic service tool (like Case IH EST) to clear the fault codes and verify that the actuator responds correctly to ECM commands without logging effort errors.
