Case IH 3487 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Fuel injection is not possible - Unauthorized use

This fault code indicates an active anti-theft/immobilizer lockout. The Engine Control Module (ECM) has intentionally disabled the fuel injection system because it did not receive the correct cryptographic authorization signal from the machine's immobilizer system or transponder key.

   Verify the Key: Ensure the operator is using the correct, programmed transponder key for that specific machine. A damaged, cloned, or unprogrammed key will trigger this fault.

   Check Dash Indicators: Look for a blinking immobilizer or anti-theft security light on the instrument cluster, which confirms the system is actively rejecting the key.

   Check Battery Voltage: A dead battery, a recent battery replacement, or a severe voltage drop can cause the immobilizer module to lose synchronization with the ECM.

   Inspect CAN Bus Communication: Verify that the CAN bus wiring between the ignition transponder ring, the immobilizer module, and the Engine ECU is intact.

   Perform a Key Relearn/Reset

   Before replacing parts, attempt to resync the key transponder. A common manual relearn procedure involves turning the ignition to the ON position (without cranking) for 10 minutes, turning it OFF, and repeating this cycle three times. This can force the vehicle's computer to relearn the key fob code.

   Scan with Case IH EST

   If the manual reset fails, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port. Check the immobilizer module for specific transponder recognition errors.

   Inspect the Transponder Ring

   Remove the steering column shroud and inspect the transponder antenna ring surrounding the ignition cylinder. Look for broken wires or a loose connector.

   Test Wiring Harness

   Use a multimeter to check for continuity and verify there are no shorts or open circuits on the CAN lines between the immobilizer module and the ECM.

   Reprogram or Replace

   If the key, antenna, and wiring are verified good, the transponder key may have failed, or the immobilizer module/ECM has an internal fault. You will need to supply a new OEM key and use the Case IH EST to program it to the machine.
