Case IH 35 – PTO Controller or Transmission Controller (TMF / ECM): pto solenoid ground circuit failed
Issue description
The controller detects that the PTO solenoid circuit has failed, shorted to ground, or has an open circuit. This electrical fault prevents the solenoid from properly actuating the hydraulic flow required to engage or maintain the PTO clutch, resulting in the PTO failing to start, slipping, or spontaneously disengaging.

Check the cause
Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor and disconnect the PTO controller connector (e.g., black connector C057). Inspect the pins (typically pins 4 and 5) for corrosion.
Test the resistance of the PTO solenoid directly from the controller connector to the chassis ground. Depending on the specific solenoid and ambient temperature (e.g., 68°F), a healthy coil should read approximately 9.3 to 10 ohms.
Measure the resistance directly across the solenoid coil terminals on the transmission block. If the multimeter reads infinite (open circuit) or close to zero (dead short), the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Check the fender-mounted rear PTO switch (if fitted). A short to +12V or a short across the fender switch wires can also trigger related circuit faults.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical shorts or module damage during repair.
Examine and Repair Wiring
Trace the wiring harness from the PTO controller down to the PTO solenoid and the PTO speed sensor on the transmission. Look for areas where the harness may have been chewed by rodents or rubbed bare against the chassis.
Splice Damaged Wires
If wire damage is found, strip back the damaged section and use weather-sealed butt connectors and heat shrink to splice in replacement wire.
Replace the Solenoid (if tested faulty)
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, locate the PTO solenoid valve on the transmission/hydraulic block.
Remove the Faulty Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the solenoid. Unthread/remove the solenoid cartridge from the valve block (be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid).
Install the New Solenoid
Insert the new OEM solenoid valve, torque to manufacturer specifications, and reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the PTO engagement via the cab switch to ensure the fault code is cleared and the PTO locks up correctly.
