Issue description

The engine or vehicle controller is detecting an abnormally high voltage or frequency on the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) circuit. This typically points to a short-to-power in the wiring harness or an internal failure of the speed sensor itself, causing it to send a voltage reading above the maximum expected threshold.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on the transmission housing, rear axle, or transfer case. Inspect the sensor and its connector for physical damage, water ingress, or severe corrosion.

  2. Wiring Harness Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the signal wire with the key in the ON position. If the wire shows battery voltage (12V) or a 5V reference when it should be grounded or open, trace the harness back to the ECU to locate and repair the short-to-power.

  3. Tachometer Circuit Check: Verify the dash cluster/tachometer wiring if the speed signal is routed through the cab display before reaching the ECU.

  4. Check for Related Codes: Look for companion codes that might help isolate the issue, such as 3497 (NPL error for vehicle speed signal), 3498 (Signal level low), or 3499 (Vehicle speed is too high).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECU from voltage spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the transmission speed sensor / VSS on the drivetrain. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short-to-power in the harness, splice in a wiring repair kit or replace the damaged section of the harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring tests good, the sensor has failed internally. Remove the retaining bolt, pull the old sensor out, lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid, and install it. Torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EASy tool, TEXA, or Jaltest) to the machine's diagnostic port and clear the stored fault codes.

  6. Test Drive

    Operate the machine to verify that the speedometer/tachometer registers correctly and that the engine does not enter a derate or limp-home mode.
