Case IH 3503 – Engine ECU: ECU internal failure - Software resets in DSM
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has experienced an internal software crash, watchdog event, or unexpected reboot. The DSM (Diagnostic Status Module/Message) logs this fault when it detects that the software had to reset itself to recover from a processing error.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Farmall series (40, 45, 50, 115U, 120C)
- Magnum series (180-380)
- Steiger series (370-620)
- Wheel Loaders (521F-1121F, 1021F, 721F)
- Crawler Dozers (1150K, 1650L)
- Backhoe Loaders (580SN)
- MXM series
Check the cause
Verify that the battery voltage is stable. Voltage drops during cranking or voltage spikes from a faulty alternator can trigger internal software resets.
Inspect the main power and ground connections to the Engine ECU. Look for loose, corroded, or damaged ground straps on the chassis and engine block.
Look for accompanying codes such as 3501, 3502 (Software resets in DSM 0/1), 3243, 3244 (ECU Recovery Occurred), or 3245 (ECM Processor - Watchdog Not Plausible). Multiple codes point heavily toward a failing module.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check if there is a newer software payload/calibration available for the Engine ECU to patch known software bugs.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Clean Connections
Clean all battery terminals and chassis grounds.
Inspect ECU Harness
Locate the Engine ECU. Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors. Inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and reconnect securely.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool and clear the inactive/active fault codes.
Test Run
Start the engine and run it under load to see if code 3503 returns.
Replace ECU
If the code returns immediately or during operation, the Engine ECU has suffered a permanent internal hardware/memory failure. Remove the faulty ECU and install a replacement.
Reprogramming
A new or remanufactured ECU will be blank. You must use the CNH EST tool to flash the correct engine software payload and input the specific injector trim codes for the machine before it will start.
