Case IH 3504 – Engine Control Module (ECM): CAN timeout error - TSC1PE Message
Issue description
This code indicates a communication failure (timeout) on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Engine Control Module (ECM) has stopped receiving the 'TSC1PE' message, which carries torque and speed control demands from the ABS/ASR, PTO controller, or Transmission Control Unit (TCU). Because the ECM can no longer verify the requested torque/speed limits, it defaults to a protective 'Limp home status' (engine derate/torque limitation) to prevent equipment damage.

Check the cause
Measure the terminating resistance of the CAN network (should typically read around 60 ohms). Incorrect resistance indicates a wiring break or a failed terminating resistor.
Check the CAN line wiring between the ECM and the transmitting module (TCU, PTO controller, or ABS module) for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to battery.
Inspect the ECM and TCU/ABS connectors for moisture intrusion, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
Verify that the transmitting control unit (PTO/TCU/ABS) is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.
Isolate the Harness
Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECM to the transmission/PTO/ABS control unit.
Inspect and Clean
Disconnect the harness at both ends. Inspect for water ingress or damaged pins. Clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner and dry thoroughly.
Test Continuity
Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end. Repair any broken wires or chafed insulation causing a short.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all modules, reconnect the battery, and use a diagnostic scanner (such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Module Replacement (If Necessary)
If the wiring is perfectly intact and the CAN network resistance is correct, the fault lies within the internal CAN transceiver of either the transmitting module or the ECM. The faulty module will need to be replaced or reflashed by a dealer.
