Case IH 3505 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): CAN timeout error - TSC1VE message (Limp home status)

Issue description

The TSC1VE (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Vehicle to Engine) message contains the torque and speed demand information sent from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) to the Engine Data Controller (EDC) over the CAN bus. When the engine controller fails to receive this message within the expected timeframe (timeout), it cannot determine the requested engine speed or torque. As a safety and protection measure, the system automatically forces the machine into a 'Limp home status' (engine derate/limited operation).

Check the cause

  1. Verify the presence and physical connection of the Vehicle Controller (VCM) to the CAN network

  2. Test the CAN bus wiring between the VCM and the Engine ECU for disconnected cables, broken wires (open circuits), or short circuits to ground/battery

  3. Inspect the harness connectors at both the VCM and the EDC for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress

  4. Verify that the CAN controller within the Vehicle Controller is functioning and transmitting data using a DATAR scope or CNH Electronic Service Tool

  5. Ensure there is no severe electrical interference disrupting the CAN signal

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the battery negative terminal before servicing ECU wiring.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or short in the CAN bus lines between the VCM and EDC, repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splice kits or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Connector Maintenance

    Clean any corroded connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Re-seat the connectors firmly.

  4. Software Flash

    If the wiring is intact, the issue may be a software overrun or internal control unit glitch. Reprogram/flash the central unit (VCM/EDC) with the latest software via the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  5. Module Replacement

    If the error persists after wiring repairs and software flashing, the internal CAN controller of the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or the Engine ECU is defective. Replace the faulty control unit and program it to the tractor.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and test-drive the tractor to ensure the TSC1VE message is broadcasting and the limp mode is deactivated.
