Case IH 3508 (DTC FAEF) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque limitation active
Issue description
This is an informational code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has intentionally derated the engine (reduced power and torque) due to emissions compliance issues (SCR/DEF failure) or for engine protection (critical parameter out of range).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Steiger
- Magnum
- Optum
- Puma
Check the cause
Check for active root codes in the diagnostic display or CNH Electronic Service Tool to find the primary fault triggering the derate
Verify the DEF/AdBlue tank level and fluid quality, as contaminated or degraded DEF frequently causes emissions derates
Monitor live data on the engine information page to compare intake, inlet, and outlet exhaust temperatures for discrepancies indicating a faulty sensor
Ensure engine coolant and exhaust gas temperatures are within normal operating ranges and the cooling system is functioning properly
Repair steps
Identify the Primary Fault
Locate the root fault code in the ECU memory that was logged at the exact same time the 3508 torque limitation became active.
Repair the Root Cause
Follow the specific OEM troubleshooting steps for the primary fault.
Clear Fault Codes
Once the physical repair is made, clear the inactive codes from the ECU.
Perform System Reset/Regen
If the derate was caused by the emissions system, perform a stationary regeneration, an SCR inducement reset via the CNH EST laptop, or a high-load run to get the exhaust temperatures above 450°F to prove the system is functioning correctly.
