Case IH 3509-03 - DEC – Engine ECU (Engine Control Unit): 5 Volt Sensor Supply Instance 1 Electrical Circuit Fault Voltage Above Normal

Issue description

Sensor supply voltage #1 is out of range high or 5 Volt Sensor DC Power Supply: Voltage Above Normal. The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the voltage on this 5V supply circuit has exceeded the normal operating threshold (typically shorted to a higher voltage source, such as the 12V battery circuit).

Check the cause

  1. Consult the specific machine's wiring schematic to identify exactly which sensors are powered by the 5V Sensor Supply 1 circuit (commonly fuel rail pressure, MAP, EGR temp, and camshaft speed/timing sensors).

  2. Turn the key ON without starting the engine to see if the code is currently active or stored.

  3. Perform a sensor isolation test: disconnect the sensors on the 5V Supply 1 circuit one at a time. If disconnecting a specific sensor causes the 3509-03 code to go inactive (or flip to a 3509-04 code), that specific sensor is internally shorted.

  4. With all sensors on the circuit disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the sensor connector's 5V supply pin. If it reads significantly higher than 5 volts (e.g., 12 volts), the wiring harness is shorted to a power source.

  5. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECU and check for continuity between the 5V supply wire and any 12V power wires in the harness to pinpoint the short.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine power

    Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery ground cable before repairing wiring.

  2. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If the sensor isolation test identified a specific sensor that was internally shorting the 5V circuit to a higher voltage, replace that sensor.

  3. Repair Wiring Harness

    If the harness check revealed a short to battery voltage, trace the 5V supply wire back to the ECU. Look for rub-throughs, melted insulation, or pinched wires, particularly where the harness routes around engine brackets or the chassis. Repair the damaged wire(s) using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. ECU Replacement

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and no sensors are shorted, but the ECU is outputting more than 5 volts on the reference pin, the Engine ECU has an internal failure and must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes and Verify

    Reconnect all components and battery power. Turn the key ON and clear the fault codes. Run the engine and perform a functional test to ensure the 3509-03 code does not return and sensor values are reading normally.
