Case IH 3509-03 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Controller: Trailer brake control line pressure sensor voltage high

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the pneumatic trailer brake pressure sensor to the controller is out of its expected range on the high side. This condition is typically caused by the sensor's signal wire being shorted to a power source (short to battery/Vcc), an open ground circuit in the sensor harness, or an internal short/failure within the pressure sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Verify power supply fuses for the ITBV system (e.g., F-030, F-601, F-602 depending on model).

  2. Visually inspect the pneumatic trailer brake pressure sensor and wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to voltage.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damage.

  4. Use a multimeter to check the sensor connector for a proper 5V reference and a good ground. Test the signal wire for continuity to the ITBV module and ensure it is not shorted to battery voltage.

  5. Monitor live pressure sensor voltage using an Electronic Service Tool (EST). If voltage reads maximum (e.g., 5V) when unplugged, the harness is shorted. If it drops to 0V when unplugged, the sensor is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Depressurize the System

    CRITICAL STEP. Before removing the sensor, you must completely depressurize the pneumatic trailer brake system. Locate the air reservoir and open the drain valve (OEM Part # 82004266) to bleed off all compressed air.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the trailer brake pressure sensor. Use a wrench to carefully unthread the faulty sensor from the ITBV valve block or air line.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new pressure sensor into the port. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can damage the pneumatic threads).

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector to the sensor. Ensure the harness is routed safely away from moving parts or heat sources and secure it with a cable tie (e.g., fir tree clip 84292754).

  6. Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and allow the onboard air compressor to build system pressure. Spray a mild soapy water solution around the new sensor threads to verify there are no air leaks.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use the EST or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display to clear the 3509-03 fault code. Test the trailer brake actuation to ensure the ITBV system is functioning normally.
