Case IH 3509-04 - DEC – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Sensor Supply Voltage 1 : Voltage Below Normal

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit (Supply 1) provided by the engine computer to power various engine sensors has dropped below its minimum acceptable voltage threshold. This is almost always caused by a short to ground, either within the wiring harness or internally inside one of the sensors sharing this 5-volt circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's battery voltage and ECM supply voltage are within normal operating ranges, as low system voltage can trigger false sensor supply codes.

  2. Identify all sensors on the '5V Supply 1' circuit (commonly fuel rail pressure, oil pressure, boost pressure, or EGR differential pressure).

  3. Perform a sensor isolation test: Disconnect these sensors one at a time while monitoring active fault codes. If the 3509-04 code goes inactive (or changes to an open circuit code), the unplugged sensor has an internal short to ground.

  4. If all sensors are unplugged and the code remains active, check the wiring harness between the ECM and the sensors for a short to ground.

  5. Inspect the ECM connectors and pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the 5V supply to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Turn the key switch to the OFF position.

  2. Based on the diagnostic isolation test, if a sensor was identified as the culprit, remove the faulty sensor from the engine block or fuel rail.

  3. Install the replacement sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. If the harness was identified as the issue, use a multimeter to trace the 5V supply wire from the ECM connector to the sensor connectors to locate the chafe mark or melted insulation causing the short to ground.

  5. Repair the damaged wire using an approved wiring harness repair kit (solder and heat shrink, or replacement connector pins).

  6. Reconnect all sensors and the ECM.

  7. Turn the key switch ON and verify that the 3509-04 code is now inactive or can be cleared from the ECM history.
