Case IH 3510-03 - VCM – VCM: 5V sensor supply #2 voltage high

Issue description

The control module has detected that the voltage on the #2 5-volt sensor supply circuit has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold (typically > 5.25V or 5.26V). This condition is usually caused by a short to a higher voltage source (such as the 12V battery power) in the wiring harness, a shorted sensor on that specific circuit, or an internal failure within the control module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Turn the ignition OFF and the engine OFF.

  2. Disconnect the main harness connector (e.g., A5501) from the VCM.

  3. Measure the resistance between the disconnected connector pins and the corresponding female sockets on the harness. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If not, there is a wiring issue.

  4. Turn the ignition ON (Engine OFF). At the connector of the sensors on the #2 supply circuit, measure the voltage between the 5V supply (+) and return (-) sockets.

  5. Monitor the voltage. If the voltage measures higher than 5.26V, there is a short to a higher voltage source.

  6. Disconnect the sensors on the #2 5V supply circuit one at a time. If the voltage drops back to a normal 5V after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Repair the Harness

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to battery voltage (B+) on the signal or supply wire in the harness, locate the chafed or melted section of the wiring harness and repair the shorted wire.

  2. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If disconnecting a specific sensor caused the voltage to return to normal, replace that internally shorted sensor.

  3. Replace the VCM

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no shorts to power) and all sensors are functioning, but the VCM is still outputting an excessively high voltage on the #2 sensor supply circuit, the VCM has suffered an internal hardware failure. Replace the VCM.

  4. Verification

    Reconnect all components, turn the ignition ON, and use the dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display to verify that code 3510-03 has changed from 'Active' to 'Inactive'. Clear the code.
