Case IH 3510-04 - VCM – VCM: 5V sensor supply #2 voltage low

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the 5-volt reference circuit #2—which provides power to a specific bank of 3-wire sensors—has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold (typically below 4.5 VDC).

Check the cause

  1. Consult the machine's electrical schematic to identify which sensors are powered by the 5V Supply #2 circuit. Disconnect these sensors one at a time; if the 5V reference voltage returns to normal after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.

  2. If all sensors on the #2 circuit are disconnected and voltage remains low, inspect the wiring harness linking the components to the VCM for chafing, pinched wires, or bare spots causing a short-circuit to the chassis ground.

  3. Inspect the VCM and sensor connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the 5V supply to a ground pin.

  4. Disconnect the harness directly at the VCM and measure the voltage at the VCM output pin for the #2 5V supply. If the VCM fails to output approximately 5.0V with the harness completely removed, the VCM has an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Address the Short

    If a sensor is shorted: Remove and replace the faulty sensor. If the harness is shorted: Locate the damaged section of the wiring harness. Cut out the damaged wire, splice in a new section using solder and heat-shrink tubing, and re-loom the harness to prevent future chafing.

  3. Replace the VCM (if internally failed)

    If the VCM is not outputting 5V, remove the mounting hardware and harness connectors. Install the replacement VCM. Note: A new VCM will likely require flashing/calibration using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop.

  4. Verify Repair

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the diagnostic menu or EST to clear the inactive 3510-04 fault code. Run the machine to verify the code does not return and that sensor readings are accurate.
