Case IH 3511-03 - VCM – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Sensor supply voltage #3 out of range high

Issue description

The 5-volt reference circuit #3, which powers a specific group of sensors, is experiencing a voltage higher than the expected 5V limit. This is typically caused by a short to a higher voltage source (such as the 12V battery circuit) within the wiring harness or an internal short inside one of the sensors on that specific 5V rail.

Check the cause

  1. Check the connectors and continuity of the harnesses linking each component on the #3 5V supply circuit, specifically testing for a short-circuit to a 12V power source

  2. Check the sources of energy to the VCM/ECU, including all relevant fuses, main supply lines, and ground connections

  3. Check the resistance of the sensors on the #3 supply circuit to identify any internal shorts

  4. Verify the operating conditions of the components, checking for mechanical seizing, extreme temperatures, or physical damage to sensor housings

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Circuit

    Consult your specific machine's wiring schematic to identify exactly which sensors are powered by '5V Sensor Supply #3'. (This often includes pressure, temperature, or position sensors).

  2. Isolate the Sensors

    Disconnect the sensors on this 5V circuit one at a time.

  3. Monitor the Voltage

    After unplugging each sensor, cycle the key and check if the 3511-03 code goes inactive or if the voltage drops back to the normal 5V range. If the voltage normalizes when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor has an internal short and must be replaced.

  4. Inspect the Wiring Harness

    If all sensors are unplugged and the voltage remains high, the short is in the wiring harness. Visually inspect the harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points where a 12V wire might be rubbing against the 5V reference wire. Repair the damaged wiring as necessary.

  5. Test the VCM/ECU

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no shorts to power) and all sensors are functioning, the VCM or ECU itself may have an internal fault sending too much voltage to the rail. In this case, verify compatibility of program versions/settings, and replace or re-flash the module if required.
