Case IH 3511-04 - VCM – VCM: 5V sensor supply #3 voltage low
Issue description
The controller is detecting that the 5-volt reference circuit #3 is operating below its normal voltage threshold (shorted to ground). This means either a sensor on this 5V circuit has failed internally and is pulling the reference voltage down, or the wiring harness is shorted to ground.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Steiger
- CVX series
- STS Combines (9470, 9570, 9670 STS)
Check the cause
Verify overall vehicle electrical system voltage (battery and alternator output) to ensure the VCM is receiving proper base power.
Visually inspect the wiring harness for the 5V sensor supply #3 circuit for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.
Perform a sensor drop-out test: disconnect the sensors on the #3 5V supply one at a time. If the 5V reference returns to normal when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.
Inspect the VCM connectors for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion that could bridge the 5V supply to a ground pin.
Repair steps
Disconnect Battery
Always disconnect battery power before repairing wiring or replacing modules.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, splice and repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Faulty Sensor
If isolating the sensors proved one was pulling the voltage down, remove and replace the internally shorted sensor.
Test the VCM
If the harness is completely isolated (unplugged from all sensors) and the VCM still does not output ~5V on the #3 supply pin, the internal power supply of the VCM has failed.
Replace VCM
If the VCM is deemed defective, install a new module. Note: A new VCM will require dealer programming/calibration to match the machine's configuration.
Clear Codes
Reconnect battery power, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3511-04 fault code.
