Case IH 3512-04 - VCM – VCM: 8V sensor supply voltage low
Issue description
Triggers when the 8-volt reference circuit drops below the acceptable operating threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor pulling the voltage down, or a failed internal voltage regulator within the control module itself.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the VCM to the sensors on the 8V circuit. Look for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or melted areas that could cause a short to ground.
Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect the sensors powered by this 8V supply one at a time. Monitor the 8V supply line with a multimeter (Key ON, Engine OFF). If the voltage jumps back up to ~8V when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.
Connector Check: Inspect the VCM connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which can cause excessive resistance or bridging between pins.
VCM Output Test: If all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests good (no continuity to ground on the 8V wire), test the 8V output pin directly at the VCM to check if the internal power supply has failed.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and engage the master battery disconnect switch before unplugging any major modules to prevent electrical arcing.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using an OEM-approved weather-sealed wiring repair kit.
Replace Faulty Sensor
If isolating a sensor restored the 8V circuit, replace the internally shorted sensor. Reconnect all other sensors and verify the voltage remains stable.
Replace the VCM
If the VCM itself is failing to output 8V: Disconnect the multi-pin harnesses from the VCM. Unbolt the VCM from its mounting bracket. Install the new VCM and reconnect the harnesses. Note: A new VCM will be blank or require machine-specific configuration. You will need a dealer with the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software, calibrate the module, and pair it with the tractor's CAN bus network.
Clear Codes
Once the repair is complete, clear the inactive 3512-04 fault code and cycle the key to ensure it does not return.
