Case IH 3512 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): DCU State Monitoring - DCU not ready in time
Issue description
This code indicates a communication or initialization timeout within the emissions system. Specifically, the Dosing Control Unit (DCU)—which manages the injection of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system—fails to boot up and report a "ready" status to the main engine computer within the expected timeframe during startup or operation.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Magnum Tractors 235, 250, 265, 280, 290, 310, 340, 380
- Steiger / Quadtrac Tractors 350, 370, 420, 470, 500, 540, 580, 620
- Puma Tractors 125, 210
- Axial-Flow Combines 5150, 6140, 7150, 7240, 8240, 8250, 9250
- Patriot / Trident Sprayers 5550
Check the cause
Check battery and ground connections to verify the DCU is receiving full battery voltage during key-on, as a weak battery or poor chassis ground can cause modules to boot up slowly.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECU to the DCU for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion in the connectors.
Test CAN bus communication lines for proper continuity and resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network) and look for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., 3537).
Physically inspect the DEF dosing module for signs of physical damage, fluid intrusion, or freezing damage.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts during replacement.
Access the Module
Locate the DEF Dosing Module/DCU assembly (typically mounted near the DEF tank or along the frame rail).
Disconnect Lines
Carefully disconnect the DEF fluid lines and the electrical harness connectors from the module. Cap the fluid lines to prevent contamination.
Remove the Unit
Unbolt the faulty DCU/Dosing Module from its mounting bracket.
Install the New Unit
Mount the replacement module, reconnect the fluid lines securely, and plug in the electrical harness.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery.
Programming / Calibration
A new DCU must be programmed and paired to the vehicle's ECU using a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or TEXA). The system will not function plug-and-play.
System Prime Test
Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and perform a "DEF Dosing System Prime Test" to bleed air from the lines and verify the module is communicating and pumping correctly.
