Case IH 3530 (DTC E26E) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Management System (EMS): Downstream NOx sensor internal failure (Heater Short Circuit Error)

Issue description

The downstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor is located in the exhaust system directly after the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. It measures the pollutant levels exiting the tailpipe to verify that the emissions system is functioning efficiently. This specific code means the internal heating element inside the sensor—which is required to bring the sensor up to operating temperature—has suffered a short circuit. If left unaddressed, this failure will trigger the machine's SCR inducement warnings, leading to engine power loss and eventually forcing the engine into a low-idle state.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the downstream NOx sensor for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could cause a short circuit to ground or power.

  2. Disconnect the downstream NOx sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Check for accompanying codes that might point to a broader CAN bus or harness issue (e.g., DTC 3533 for CAN timeout or DTC 3529 for heater open circuit).

  4. Verify that the sensor power supply voltage is within the acceptable range (checking for codes like 478E).

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled. The downstream NOx sensor is located in the exhaust pipe and gets extremely hot during operation.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the downstream NOx sensor, which is positioned in the exhaust stream directly after the DOC/SCR catalyst assembly.

  4. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector for the sensor. Use a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket or wrench to carefully unthread the sensor from the exhaust pipe.

  5. Preparation

    If the new sensor does not have anti-seize pre-applied to the threads, apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound. Caution: Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor probe tip, as this will ruin the sensor.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new downstream NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. System Reset

    Reconnect the battery. Use a commercial-grade diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault codes.

  8. Warm-Up Cycle

    Start the engine. The system may require a warm-up cycle (or a forced stationary regeneration) to wick moisture off the new sensor tip and change its status from "Not Ready" to "Ready," which will clear the SCR inducement warnings.
