Case IH 3531 (F-3232-12) – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Downstream NOx sensor internal failure (Heater Performance Plausibility Error)

Issue description

The downstream Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor contains an internal heating element designed to bring the sensor up to operating temperature and burn off condensation (managing the 'dew point'). This code triggers when the control module detects that the heater's performance is implausible—meaning the heater is failing to reach the correct temperature, warming up too slowly, or sending an out-of-range feedback signal.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes that might indicate a wiring issue rather than an internal sensor failure, such as 3529 (Heater Open Circuit), 3530 (Heater Short Circuit), or 3533 (CAN timeout from downstream NOx sensor).

  2. Examine the 5-pin electrical connector at the downstream NOx sensor module. Look for pushed pins, corrosion, melted wires, or chafing along the harness leading back to the ECU.

  3. Ensure the sensor is receiving the correct 12V power supply and has a solid ground.

  4. Using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST), monitor the sensor's 'Dew Point' parameter. It should read 'not ready' upon startup until moisture is wicked off the tip, and then transition to 'Ready.' If it never transitions, the heater is definitively failed.

  5. Ensure there are no exhaust leaks between the SCR catalyst and the downstream NOx sensor, as escaping exhaust can skew temperature readings and trigger plausibility errors.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and wait for the aftertreatment system to complete its purge cycle (listen for the DEF pump to stop clicking). Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the downstream NOx sensor. It is positioned in the exhaust pipe directly after the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 5-pin electrical connector from the NOx sensor control module. Unclip the wiring harness from any retaining brackets.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Carefully unscrew the NOx sensor probe from the exhaust pipe. (Note: Because of extreme exhaust heat, penetrating oil may be required to free the threads without damaging the exhaust bung).

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Apply high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not already pre-applied by the manufacturer). Thread it into the exhaust pipe and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

    Secure the sensor control module, route the wiring away from extreme heat sources, and plug in the 5-pin connector.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use the EST diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault codes.

  8. Validation

    Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature to ensure the new sensor reaches 'Ready' status and the fault code does not return.
