Case IH 3531 – Engine Management System (EMS) / Engine Control Module (ECM) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Downstream NOx sensor internal failure (Heater Performance Plausibility Error)

Issue description

The downstream NOx sensor relies on an internal heater to reach operating temperature and evaporate moisture (wicking off the tip of the sensor to reach the 'Dew Point'). This fault code indicates that the Engine Management System has detected an internal failure within the sensor, specifically that the heater's performance is implausible or failing to heat the sensor correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN communication codes, specifically code 3533 (CAN timeout error from downstream NOx sensor).

  2. Connect a diagnostic tool and monitor the 'Dew Point' parameter for the downstream NOx sensor. It should transition from 'not ready' to 'Ready'. If it never reaches 'Ready', the heater is confirmed faulty.

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the downstream NOx sensor for melted wires, corrosion, or physical damage.

  4. Check for exhaust leaks between the SCR catalyst and the downstream NOx sensor, which can skew temperature and emissions readings.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Ensure the engine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the downstream NOx sensor, which is threaded into the exhaust pipe directly after the SCR catalyst.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main engine wiring harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket or wrench, carefully unscrew the faulty sensor from the exhaust pipe. (Penetrating fluid may be required if the sensor is seized due to high exhaust heat).

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new downstream NOx sensor into the exhaust pipe. Tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the new sensor's electrical connector back into the wiring harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use a Case IH diagnostic tool to clear the permanent fault code (DTC) from the ECU.

  8. Warm-Up Cycle

    Turn the key switch ON, then OFF, then ON to initiate the warm-up cycle. Start the engine and allow it to run so the new sensor can reach its dew point and return to a 'Ready' status.
